Integrative
Approach to the Effects of Stress
Our bodies were created to be in balance with a natural ability
to adjust (feedback system) to changes and some assaults.
The mind is an important component in this balance. Our thoughts,
emotions and levels of stress, can affect our wellness. There
has been extensive research on the effects of stress on the
human body. Studies of neurotransmitters and psychoneuroimmunology
have validated the biological connection between mind and
body. Changing and directing thought patterns especially in
the deeper consciousness can send healing "messages"
to the body. Meditation, biofeedback and hypnosis are some
of the modalities that can be utilized to reduce the effects
of stressors in our life.
The goal
of a holistic approach is always to use the least invasive
approach to dis-ease, as well as looking at the whole person,
mind, body and spirit. But what if our stress reaction and
our emotional state are so out of balance that it is not possible
to create that degree of change initially. This is when careful,
informed use of supplements are indicated. Some natural supplements
such as Kava Kava, Chamomile, St. John's Wort, along with
breath work, meditation, massage, yoga and energy work, can
be effective. If this is not sufficient in reducing anxiety
or relieving depression, allopathic medicine may be indicated
and again, in the lowest effective dose for the shortest period
of time. We believe in moving away from the "all or nothing"
idea that seems to prevail in our society. Integrative medicine
is just that; an integrative approach utilizing the best that
we have available.
Remember,
natural herbs and supplements are medicine and need to be
taken seriously and with the same caution and precautions
as pharmaceutical drugs. We are each unique individuals with
the same spiritual Divine light. The uniqueness lies in our
human response -- mentally, emotionally and physically to
our journey here, and the events of our life. Each person's
belief system is essential in their treatment plan. Believing
in the modality that you are using to heal is a component
that cannot be overlooked. Remember, mind and body. What works
for one person, may not for another. Let's move away from
the cookie cutter approach that there is only one way to heal.
