Reflexology:
A Foot in the Right Direction
by David Hendry, Reflexologist, LPTA
Many
people have heard of reflexology, but don't know exactly what
it is or how beneficial it can be for their health. Reflexology
is the science that deals with the principle that there are
reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all
the glands, organs, and parts of the body. It is a unique
method of using the thumb and fingers on these reflex areas.
Reflexology seeks to treat the individual as a complete entity,
incorporating mind, body and spirit.
Reflexology teaches that a vital energy, or life force, circulates
between the organ systems of the body, penetrating every living
cell and tissue. If this energy becomes blocked, the part
of the body relating to the blockage is affected. These energy
blocks can be detected by the Reflexologist through the experience
of discomfort felt by the client, or through the presence
of "gritty" areas, often referred to as crystal deposits.
These occur in the part of the foot or hand that relates to
the part of the body that in unbalanced. The location of the
reflex areas on the feet and hands, mirror the location of
the corresponding organs of the body. For example, the heart
reflex is found on the left foot and hand. The pressure and
specific thumb and finger techniques taught in reflexology
are designed to dissipate energy blocks, break down crystalline
structures, and reestablish balance.
Reflexology can be used to relieve stress and tension, improve
the blood supply, promote the unblocking of nerve impulses,
as well as any number of other physical complaints. In short,
it can help normalize the function of the body and bring it
into a natural state of homeostasis. Reflexology treats the
body as a whole and endeavors to get to the root cause of
disease and treat this, rather than just the symptoms of the
disease. Reflexology does not look to take the place of traditional
medicine and therapies, but works in conjunction with these
fields. For best results, the full participation of the client
is required. Ultimately, the reflexologist is not responsible
for the client's health. In all holistic therapies, emphasis
is places on taking responsibility for one's own state of
health.
Reflexology can be considered the equivalent of a car tune-up
- a body tune-up. Since you can't trade your body in for a
newer model, it makes sense to treat the body you have with
care.
